Nobody discovers a mouse problem. They discover the damage a dishwasher that stops draining, insulation shredded into a nest, a gnawed hole in a bag of feed, droppings along a baseboard they only noticed by accident.

2 - Close what you can close

Steel wool packed tightly into gaps, hardware cloth over vents, door sweeps on exterior doors. Mice can chew through foam and plastic; they don't get through steel wool or wire mesh.

No repellent substitutes for this. A scent barrier at a sealed entry point works far better than the same barrier at an open one, because you have reduced the number of routes it has to cover.

If a brand tells you their product alone replaces sealing, that is a marketing decision, not a pest control one.

5- Trap anything already inside

A repellent is a deterrent. It raises the cost of a space for an animal deciding whether to enter. It does not remove a mouse that has already nested, and it will not resolve an active infestation on its own.
