11 Rituals I Didn’t Know I Had
My name is Tara. I’m 41. I live in North Carolina with my husband and our two kids.
We’ve had mice on and off for about two years. Nothing extreme. A sighting here. Droppings there. I set some traps. I sprayed peppermint oil. The usual.
But after Jen’s question, I couldn’t sleep. I sat on the couch that night and made a list of every “thing I do” before entering a room.
There were eleven.
1. Stomp my feet in the kitchen doorway
2. Turn on the light from the hallway arm stretched in, body outside
3. Clap once before opening the pantry
4. Open cabinet doors slowly, with my face turned away
5. Check behind the toaster every morning
6. Tap the trash can lid before opening it
7. Look under the bathroom sink before reaching for anything
8. Pat down the couch cushions before sitting at night
9. Keep slippers on after 7 PM never bare feet
10. Cough loudly before entering the laundry room
11. Check the toilet before sitting down
I’d been doing every one of these for months. Every single day. Without thinking about them. Without noticing them.
Each one started after a sighting or a dropping. A mouse behind the toaster now I check the toaster. A mouse ran when I entered the kitchen now I stomp first. A dropping inside a cabinet now I open cabinets slowly, face turned away.
Each ritual was small. But together, they were a map of a person who couldn’t walk through her own home without a series of defensive maneuvers.
And I had no idea until someone else watched me do it.
