Why "Doing Your Homework" Doesn't Protect You Here

"Careful shoppers assume the stars mean something. In categories like this one, they often don't," she told me.

Here's what she explained.

A lot of solar pest stakes sold online are the exact same generic hardware, made by the same overseas factories, just re-branded under dozens of different store names.

Since there's no real brand reputation on the line, and little oversight, some sellers lean on review volume instead of real performance to win the sale.

That means the star rating I trusted wasn't measuring whether the product actually repelled moles. It was measuring how good the seller was at generating reviews.

Once I understood that, the fix became obvious. I needed to stop shopping by star rating, and start looking for something with actual, verifiable proof a real guarantee, real coverage specifications, a company that would stand behind it in writing.
