My “Foolproof” System Lasted 3 Days
Here was my plan. Every night, I’d set snap traps along the kitchen baseboards.
Every morning, I’d pick them up before letting Bear out of the bedroom.
Night traps. Morning pickup. Simple.
It worked for three days.
On day four, I was tired. I let Bear out first. I went to make coffee.
Then I heard the snap. Then the yelp.
Bear had stepped on the trap. His paw was caught. Not broken but bruised and swollen. He limped away from me with his ears flat back.
I stood there in the kitchen staring at the trap I’d put on the floor.
The trap I set to protect my home had just hurt my dog.
I threw every trap in the trash that morning.
Then the “Pet-Safe” Poison Almost Made It Worse
My neighbor said to try the lockable bait stations. “They’re pet-safe,” he said. “Dogs can’t open them.”
He was right. Bear couldn’t open the bait station.
But here’s what nobody tells you about poison:
The mouse eats the bait. Then the mouse staggers outside to die. Then your dog finds the dead mouse in the yard.
That’s exactly what happened. One week after setting the bait stations, I found Bear in the backyard with a dead mouse in his mouth.
My stomach flipped.
I called the emergency vet. “Did he eat it? How long ago? How much poison was in the mouse?”
Two hours at the animal ER. $400. Blood work. Monitoring. Bear was fine — this time.
The vet looked at me and said something I won’t forget:
“There’s no such thing as ‘pet-safe’ poison. The mouse is the delivery system. If your dog finds the mouse, he finds the poison.”
I went home and ripped out every bait station.
Traps hurt Bear. Poison nearly poisoned him. Glue boards? He’d step on those too.
I was out of options.
