My kitchen was under siege.
If you've ever watched a cloud of tiny flies swirl up from your fruit bowl the second you set down a banana...
If you've poured bleach down every drain, scrubbed every counter, and they were back by morning...
If you've stood in your own kitchen feeling embarrassed like somehow you're the problem...
Then this is the most important thing you'll read today.
Because here's what nobody told me after my first fruit fly nightmare:
Cleaning harder doesn't mean they're gone.
It means you still haven't addressed why they keep coming back.
"But My Kitchen Is Clean"
My name is Sarah Brennan. I live outside Charlotte with my husband, our two kids, and a kitchen I'm honestly proud of.
I'm not a messy person. I wipe down my counters after every meal. I take the trash out every night. I rinse dishes immediately. I keep my fruit in bowls because I want my kids grabbing apples, not chips.
That's who I am. That's how I run my home.
Until last June.
I was prepping dinner when I noticed the first one. A tiny fly circling the bananas on the counter. Then another near the sink. Then three more hovering around the compost bin I keep under the cabinet.
I swatted at them. Wiped everything down. Threw out the bananas. Took the compost out.
The next morning, they were back.
Not one or two. A little cloud of them, lifting off the moment I turned on the kitchen light.
I stood there with a cup of coffee in my hand thinking: but my kitchen is clean.
And that confusion that feeling of doing everything right and still losing that's what made it so maddening.
Because I knew something nobody had told me yet.
I knew they weren't coming because of what I'd left out.
They were coming because of what I couldn't see.
