The Morning That Changed Everything
My name is Sarah. I'm 34. I live outside Nashville with my husband Matt, our two kids, and a golden retriever named Penny.
Last October, we started finding droppings behind the toaster.
Then inside the silverware drawer.
Then on the counter, right next to where I make my daughter's school lunch.
Matt bought glue traps from Home Depot. I didn't want them. But I was desperate. I said yes because I didn't know what else to do.
The next morning, I walked into the kitchen at 6 AM.
There it was. A mouse. Stuck to the pad. Alive. Chest heaving. One eye looking up at me.
It was making a sound I didn't know mice could make.
I stood there barefoot on the cold tile. I couldn't touch it. I couldn't leave it. I couldn't look away.
I picked up my phone and Googled "what to do with a live mouse on a glue trap."
The answers made me sick. Drown it. Suffocate it in a bag. Hit it on the head.
Matt handled it in the backyard while I sat in the bedroom with the door closed.
That night, I threw every glue trap in the trash.
But the mice didn't stop coming.
