How I Lost Three Winters In A Row
My name is Ray. I'm 63. I spent 40 years in construction before I hung it up.
My wife Diane and I bought our travel trailer for one reason. The plan. The parks. The grandkids in the bunk beds. Two months in Arizona when Michigan gets mean.
I am not a careless man. I want that on the record.
Every October I ran the same routine:
- Winterize the water lines
- Strip every scrap of food out
- Wipe down every surface
- Crawl underneath with a can of expanding foam
- Seal every hole I could find
I'd lock that door feeling pretty good about myself.
Then May would come.
What Was Waiting Behind That Door
The week before Memorial Day, I walked out with the keys in one hand and the awning brush in the other.
I opened the door and the smell hit me before my eyes adjusted.
Droppings on the counter. Droppings in every drawer. The mattress was chewed open and nested in.
And here's the thing that made no sense to me.
There were pine nut shells everywhere.
Pine nuts. From trees a hundred yards away. There was no food in that camper. Not a crumb.
They brought their own food in.
I stood there doing math. Mattress in the dumpster. A full week of scrubbing in a mask. Cushions I had to replace. And when I finally got a look at the wiring in the underbelly, I found chew marks.
That was year three. Diane looked at me and asked if we should just sell it.
That was the night I stopped buying products and started asking questions.
